Fishermen, acting on gut, find crash site, 2 girls

According to this article, on Wednesday morning in Portland, a 4-year-old girl, after discovering her mother was dead, dragged her seriously injured younger sister from a car crash. The car was stuck deep in the woods and there was no skid marks, making it difficult for officials to find them. Authorities say the young girls were alone in the woods for well over several hours, waiting for someone to rescue them. 2 fisherman finally found the girls and immidiately called 911. In this article, one of the fisherman, Mclure said "I don't know exactly what told us to turn around, but I'm just really thankful we did," on Thursday. Investigators still don't know how fast their mother was driving, or whether something else may have caused the crash. Their motherhad a record and was previously in jail for 10 years due to heroin possession and third degree theft.

Lead Oscar Pistorius investigator himself facing attempted murder charges

According to this article, Olympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius was charged with attempted murder. Pistorius admitted to shooting his girlfriend dead. His girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, 29, was shot in the bathroom of their home. Pistorius claims that he mistook her for an intruder, and will not admit to a charge of premeditated murder. The 26 year old says the two had gone to bed on February 13 and awoke early in the morning to what he thought was an intruder. He testified that he grabbed his 9mm pistol and shot into the door of the bathroom, realizing that his girlfriend was brutally injured. Kenny Oldwage, Pistorius's lawyer, said "We're very pleased with today." The hearing was scheduled for Thursday morning when a decision about his bail will be made.

Single Chinese hacking unit responsible for stealing terabytes of data from hundreds of organizations, says US security firm

According to this article, hundreds of governmental and industrial data from the United States have been hacked and stolen by a Chinese unit. According to computer security firm Mandiant, a single hacker unit of the People’s Liberation Army of Unit 61398, a single hacking device, is responsible for stealing hundreds of terabytes of data from the US. Chinese Foreign Ministry, Hong Lei, says that the United States is responsible for also hacking into information from China. Although Mandiant’s is reported as being a hacker, it’s not entirely true that the report is accurate.

Florida ‘Python Challenge’ concludes with just 68 snakes caught

The challenge started Jan. 12, 2013 and ended on Feb 10 at midnight.

According to this article, the first public snake hunt was held in the Florida Everglades yesterday. It has come to a close. The "Python Challenge" captured 68 Burmese pythons during the competition, which lasted a month. Official say that the hunt will prevent thousands of pythons to be born in the Everglades to regulate the population. The end of the competition was celebrated at Zoo Miami Saturday, to award the hunters. Ruben Ramirez and his team were awared with $1,500 for capturing the most pythons. Officials said this won't be the last time the public hears of the "Python Challenge," and that they "definitely anticipate to do something of this nature again."

According to this article, a meteor exploded in the skies above Russia today, sending a shock wave that was strong enough that it shattered windows, injuring over 100 people. "A serious meteor fell,” billionaire Sergey Galitskiy, chief executive officer of OAO Magnit, Russia’s biggest food retailer, “At our hypermarket in Emanzhelinsk, windows were blown out, the roof shook, there was a strong shock wave.” Over 100 people have reported injuries, mostly from broken glass, but none were so serious that they had to be hospitalized. “No further pieces of the meteor are expected to fall,” according to the ministry’s statement.

According to this article, recently it was discovered that meat being sold was believed to be beef, but was actually horse meat. In less than a month, the horse meat scandal spread from not only Ireland to Britain, but more of the continent. Consumers are being warned that the era of cheap food may be over. Supermarkets have have been keeping prices down at the expense due to the content and quality. Experts said it was unlikely that the horsemeat scandal will spread to the United States.

Pope's brother: Benedict seeks quiet retirement

According to this article, Pope Benedict XVI is going to retire at the end of the month. He wants to keep his decision from the public. The 85-year-old's retirement announcement was very surprising to most people. "He has been thinking about it for several months," said Monsignor Georg Ratzinger. "He concluded that his powers are falling victim to age." He said that Pope Benedict XVI is hoping to to "lead a quiet life in the Vatican." "I don't think he will write any new works," Ratzinger said, "Anything he published could be conceived as interference in the work of the next pope," he said. Ratingzer also said that the Pope thinks "that a younger person is needed to deal with the problems of the times." The new question is who will be take over Pope Benedict XVI's position but all that is know right now is that it will most likely be a European.

Gun Control Law in New York

On Tuesday, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed for firearm and mental health regulations due to the massacre that was the Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting. The law limits the number of bullets and more strongly enforces rules that protect the mentally ill, which includes to report any harmful behavior seen. After two days of voting in the state Legislature, Cuomo signed the law around 5 p.m. before he announced to reporters that speed had been required to avoid a rush on the gun market.
